DESCRIPTION:Maryville Christian School students will transport you to a “world of pure imagination” with their production of Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka JR.\, a musical based on Roald Dahl’s timeless children’s book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory\, on April 26 & 27\, 2024. \nIn Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka JR.\, a world-famous reclusive candy man named Willy Wonka announces that he will offer the tour of a lifetime through his secret chocolate factory to five children who find a golden ticket in one of his world-famous candy bars. One ticket holder will also win a lifetime supply of chocolate. Against all odds\, an impoverished but sweet-natured boy named Charlie Bucket wins a golden ticket\, along with his fellow tour members. The children encounter marvelous sights and tastes along the way\, including giant nut-selecting squirrels\, fizzy lifting drinks\, Everlasting Gobstoppers\, and a chocolate river. But each stop proves to be a test\, as only one can go on to win the Wonka prize. \nMaryville Christian School’s production of Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka JR. will be Friday\, April 26th at 7pm\, and Saturday April 27th\, at 2pm and 7pm\, at the Clayton Center for the Arts. Golden tickets are $25.

DESCRIPTION:Philosopher and best-selling author Dr. Matthew B. Crawford has been selected speaker\nof the 2024 Witherspoon Lecture Series at Maryville College and will give the address “The\nChallenge of Higher Education in an Age of Distraction” on April 8.\nThe event\, free and open to the public\, will begin at 7 p.m. in the Lambert Recital Hall of\nthe Clayton Center for the Arts. A Q&A session\, moderated by Maryville College Philosophy\nProfessor and Ralph W. Beeson Professor of Religion Dr. Bill Meyer\, will follow Crawford’s\nlecture as part of the annual Cummings Conversations.\nCrawford is author of the New York Times bestseller and critically acclaimed “Shop\nClass as Soulcraft: An Inquiry into the Value of Work\,” publication of which led the Sunday\nTimes to declare Crawford “one of the most influential thinkers of our time.” A motor mechanic\nsince the age of 15\, Crawford combined a passion for cars\, motorcycles and the freedom found in\nthe driver’s seat when writing his 2020 book Why We Drive: Toward a Philosophy of the Open\nRoad. \nHowever\, it is his 2015 book\, “The World Beyond Your Head: On Becoming an\nIndividual in an Age of Distraction\,” that Crawford will draw mostly from for his talk at the\nCollege. In writing it\, he investigated the intense focus of pipe organ builders\, hockey players\nand short-order cooks and argues that activities like theirs “reveal something about our\nconstitution that tends to get lost in the official self-understanding of the West.” He suggests that\ndistractibility could be considered the mental equivalent of obesity.\n“We find ourselves in a new type of economy\, based on the ever more aggressive\nappropriation of our attention. This makes cultivating the habits of deep\, slow thinking a difficult\nmatter\,” Crawford said. “But our distractibility is not simply due to technology. The question of\nwhat to pay attention to is ultimately a question of what to value. Without some robust and\ndemanding picture of the good life that elicits effort and devotion\, our attention will be claimed\nby the highest bidder and our lives will be dissipated.” \nCrawford majored in physics as an undergraduate\, then turned to political philosophy\,\nearning a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. Currently a senior fellow at the Institute for\nAdvanced Studies in Culture at the University of Virginia\, he has written for The New York\nTimes and First Things\, a journal of religion and public life.\nCrawford also is a contributing editor of The New Atlantis\, the stated aim of which is “a\nculture in which science and technology work for\, not on\, human beings.” In 2021\, he was\ninvited to provide testimony at a hearing of the U.S. Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on\nCompetition Policy\, Antitrust\, and Consumer Rights\, where the concerning issue was connected\nhome technology. \nWitherspoon Lecture established in 2022\nCrawford’s April 8 address is the second event of the Newell and Mary Lee Witherspoon\nLecture Series\, which the alumni couple established at the College through an endowment in\n2022. The Witherspoons\, longtime residents of Huntsville\, Alabama\, were motivated to endow a\nseries that would support the mission and build the reputation of the College by bringing\ninteresting and thought-provoking speakers and artists to campus.\nThe purpose of the lecture series is to strengthen relationships between members of the\ncampus community and also between the campus and the wider region by creating opportunities\nto learn about and discuss topics that are important\, timely and of broad interest. Events and\nguest speakers will strive to express the value of differing views\, while seeking common ground\nand acknowledging the dignity in all.\n“We are excited to welcome Dr. Crawford to Maryville College and believe his will be a\nthought-provoking lecture on a topic that is relevant to not only MC and higher education\, but\nthe wider world\,” said Karen Beaty Eldridge ’94\, executive director of marketing and\ncommunications\, and chair of the Witherspoon Lecture Series committee. “Living distracted\nlives hinders our ability to be our best selves and at our best for others. Clearing the trivial\ndistractions and focusing can help us rediscover what is truly important and ‘do good on the\nlargest possible scale\,’ as our founder\, the Rev. Isaac Anderson\, implored.”

This romantic and light-hearted three-act ballet tells the triumphant story of a young girl who finds love at a dazzling ball. The awkwardly funny stepsisters along with the glorious elegance of the Fairy Godmother and her Season Fairies help create a spectacular production for the enjoyment of the entire family. Cinderella is a ballet composed by Sergei Prokofiev and is one of the most popular and melodious compositions.  (The featured production will run approximately one and a half hours). \nCinderella will be danced by Laura Morton La Russa and dancing the role of the Prince will be James La Russa.  This husband and wife team will bring the romance to life.
