DESCRIPTION:Middle Prong Trail\nFeatures; water features\, history\, photography\nDifficulty: Moderate\nMiddle Prong Trail follows the railroad bed upon which the last logs were hauled out of the Smokies in 1939. Because of negotiations that made land purchase possible during the Depression\, the Little River Lumber Company continued to log for 5 years after the establishment of the park in 1934. The company removed one BILLION board feet of lumber (enough for 10\,000 homes) from this area between 1903 and 1930 and probably used almost as much for fuel and building. The top yielding tree species were tuliptree\, American Chestnut and basswood.\nThe trail moves away from the prong after passing a house-sized rock flanked by yellow-birchs. It ascends a bit and then levels out in a wide\, flat area. At mile 2.0\, look for a narrow trail to the right and follow it about 50 years to an oldcar frame. The car frame. The old Cadillac belonged to the supervisor of the Middle Prong Civilization Conservation Corps camp. One day it quit running and the camp members just pushed it off the road and left it.\nThe MIddle Prong CCC Camp with a crew of 172 men built trails\, bridges\, and roads between 1933 and 1937.\nThe trail becomes rocky and a little steeper as it swings around a series of switchbacks. Soon you will cross a side creek and drop down to cross Indian Flats Prong on a flatbed bridge at mile 3.5.\nYou turn around 3 switchbacks in quick succession. The long extensions on these switchbacks allowed the lumber trains to switch direction – if the engine was pushing\, it pushed the whole train out the extension and then switched to pulling.\nOn the smooth\, gray rock faces on the left of this section\, look for dynamite bore holes.\n*RSVP is required for this hike. DESCRIPTION:Earth Day Hike Meigs Mountain/Curry Mountain Trails out of Elkmont\nFeatures: Quiet Forest Hike\, History\nDistance: 7.4 miles (thru-hike/requires shuttle)\nElevation Gain: 661 ft.\nDifficulty: Moderate\nLocation: Elkmont\nCautions: Many stream crossing\, but all are easy\nThe Meigs Mountain Trail connects Elkmont and Tremont. The side of Meigs Mountain has the distinction of being one of the first parts of the Smokies to be logged by a company. The J.L. English Company went up Blanket Creek before 1900 and removed 3\,300 board feet of cherry and basswood. The later lumber companies cut everything they could and then sold the land to settlers in the 1920s. Seventeen families lived along Jakes Creek and many more lived here on the gently sloping side of Meigs Mountain.\nAt mile 4.1\, the trail rises to a small gap and meets Curry Mountain Trail which goes 3.3 miles down to Little River Road at Metcalf Bottoms.\n*RSVP is required for this hike. Ranging from homes and\nchurches to mills\, spring houses and cane presses. All of which\nneed to be preserved to keep our history alive and for future\ngenerations to appreciate.\nRob has a “Dream Job” and will be sharing his passion and\npersonal stories of working on\, in\, and under these amazing\nartifacts. Learn of fascinating things that most visitors\noverlook or see but don’t actually comprehend what they are\nseeing. His hope is that you will depart with a better\nunderstanding\, and desire to visit or revisit the Great Smoky\nMountains historic structures.\nAfterwards he will display and demonstrate the use of some\nof the tools used to construct and restore these irreplaceable\nstructures.\nRobert Eugene Sanders\, AKA Rob\, is a Carpenter at the Great\nSmoky Mountains National Park\, with the Forever Places Program\nresponsible for the preservation of the historic structures\nwithin the park. What he considers to be a “Dream Job.” He\nstarted as a seasonal maintenance mechanic in 2017 working with\na small crew to restore the Daisy Town area of Elkmont. Later\nwas rehired as a carpenter to continue the Elkmont project along\nwith many other projects.\nIn 2022 the Forever Places Program was established\, and he\nwas selected to be its first carpenter. He considers it to be\nan honor and has become passionate about the work that the\nForever Places crew does to preserve the historic structures for\nthe descendants of those that used to call the Smokies home and\nfor the millions of visitors that come to experience the Great\nSmoky Mountains.\nHis passion and dedication aren’t just to the preservation\nof the structures\, but also to the technics and tools that the\nsettlers used to construct them. He is in the process of\nbuilding and collecting his own historic tools to demonstrate\nthe skills it took to literally carve out a home and a way of\nlife in the Great Smoky Mountains.  \nEvent Location: Little River Trading Company
