A Year in the Life of the Davis Family: Seed Saving with the Tuckaleechee Garden Club

Join us for the next installment in our Davis Family Programming Series โ€” A Year in the Life of an Early-American Family (c. 1835)!
In partnership with the Tuckaleechee Garden Club, this special program explores the timeless tradition of seed saving using plants from our own Heirloom Kitchen Garden.
Learn how early Appalachian families, like the Davises of Seymour, Tennessee, preserved their harvests year after year โ€” passing seeds, stories, and skills down through generations. Youโ€™ll see demonstrations of:

Grinding corn with a mortar and pestle

Stripping seeds from dried plants

Identifying seeds used for food, medicine, and beauty
Visitors will also have the opportunity to learn about the Davis Family themselves, whose original cabin stands right here at the Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center. Their story provides a fascinating window into 19th-century Appalachian life and the heritage that continues to shape our region today.
This educational program is free, with support from the Tennessee Arts Commission!
All ages are welcome!
