Blount County is more than just a picturesque spot nestled in the Smoky Mountains. It’s also home to a vibrant arts scene, with stunning murals adorning its streets. Join us as we showcase a few of the remarkable murals found around the area!
1) “Senderos” By Nicole Salgar

You’ve most likely laid eyes on this particular mural at least once, if not hundreds of times as you’ve driven through town. Located on the side of Maryville Bike & Trail, which has one of the biggest, most visible walls in Maryville, this mural captivates those who drive by.
The artist, Nicole Salgar, had this to say about the mural once it was done: “The woman in this mural is meant to portray a gatekeeper to other dimensions or realities. Her existence is one which flows through time without boundaries. The lock and key connect to gateways, or portals into the unknown, and they can also be interpreted as a way to unlock the hidden self.”
2) “Mother Nature” By Will Lunsford & Steve Hall

Situated under the East Broadway Avenue bridge, “Mother Nature” reflects the beauty of the Smokies and symbolizes our areaโs connection to nature and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Combining two distinct art styles into one image, the two artists wanted to draw in as many people as possible to “really broaden the demographic of whoโs attracted to these murals,” shared Lunsford when he spoke to The Daily Times about the piece.
3) “Butterfly Wings” By Kelsey Montague

Whether driving through downtown or encountering them on foot, you’ve definitely seen this delightful duo of butterfly wings! With one set for yourself and a smaller set for a child (or pup!), these wings make for a wonderful photo-op!
4) “The Wall of Heroes” By Wesley Stout

This mural is a comic book lover’s dream come true. It’s a total DC reunion! The mural features iconic characters like Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and The Flash, along with lesser-known characters like the original Sandman! It’s located in front of The Golden Age, 1942.
As you stroll past this stunning piece, you realize there’s a deeper meaning behind the spandex and bright, colorful supersuits. Separated from the pack is a lone soldier, wondering if heroes are remembered.
Rest assured, sir, your service is greatly appreciated and won’t soon be forgotten.
The mural stretches close to half a city block and is located in the downtown area of the city in front of The Golden Age, 1942 comic book store at the intersection of Court and High Streets.
5) “Welcome to Townsend” Arts and Heritage Mural

It’s hard to miss this beauty if you’re traveling through Townsend! Commissioned by Townsend Cades Cove Gateway Alliance, the mural was created in part to “enhance awareness of and celebrate the arts and heritage opportunities available in the community.”
The project was done to help put a light on Townsend’s cultural assets, and we think it does just that!
