Ed Mitchell has served as mayor of Blount County for the past 16 years, and prior to that, as fire chief. His due diligence while serving the people of this community has been notable indeed, making decisions and exerting leadership without regard to political pressure, special interests, or any other inherent ideology.

Blount County bluegrass musicians Jeff Barbra and Sarah Pirkle host the monthly musical program “Behind the Barn” at Bluetick Tavern in Downtown Maryville, and they’re involved with teaching music and fostering appreciation for Appalachian culture and tradition via programs for young people at the Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center.

After his initial exposure to his father’s country and bluegrass record collection, he was inspired to pick up a mandolin at age 11 and subsequently traveled with his father to the inaugural Roanoke, Virginia Bluegrass Festival.

It says a lot about the talent residing in Blount County that there’s such a wealth of terrific singer/songwriters, artists that not only make great music, but create original songs of their own. It’s a distinctive combination, one which helps set our environs apart. Here is a list of eight great artists who have helped put Blount County on the national music map.

Herman Long witnessed first-hand the evolution of Maryville from a small town to the bountiful community it is today. His parents brought him to Blount County as a child, and he still lives here. He experienced life as an immigrant from a faraway country, only to embrace the joy he’s found as a long-time resident.
“The growth of our community has been impressive,” Long said. ”Maryville has become larger and larger due to our beautiful environment, our four seasons and the beauty of our vistas.”

College life is a time that allows for building bonds, establishing friendships, and sharing new experiences. Maryville College takes that philosophy several steps further by offering its students the opportunity to participate in the Maryville College Concert Choir and its other various vocal ensembles.
“The choir represents Maryville College as a place where students are encouraged to care deeply, work hard, and support each other,” said Stacey Wilner, senior lecturer of music and director of choral activities at Maryville College. “The way the students sing, interact, organize and carry out our events reflects the College’s values in a very real way.”
