And yet, what would ultimately inspire the man was right in front of him all along: family.
โI had to get back to the basics,โ says the introspective, self-aware artist of what finally set himย and his new songs free. โI decided I was going to write about my life and my family. Itโs whereย my heart was guiding me: to be super personal and dig right into the weeds of my life.โ Theย resulting LP, Family Ties โGodwinโs forthcoming third album, set for release on September 22ย via Big Loud Records โ is a truly stunning achievement, and the culmination of years of hardย work to arrive at this point.
This trend โ building up his fanbase in a grassroots manner and letting the music and live showย speak for itself โcontinues to this day: whether heโs headlining his own rowdy, raucous gigs, orย opening for close friend and musical comrade, Zach Bryan, Godwin says his live performancesย have never been more rewarding. Or lively, for that matter. Perhaps itโs because, as he proudlyย says, the brand of music he traffics in โ namely story songs with a head full of heart and historyย โ seems to be having a true moment. โMy shows will range from like 18-year-olds toย 80-year-olds,โ Godwin notes with a smile of his diverse, highly-enthusiastic and ever-growingย fanbase. โThatโs a pretty unique thing.โ
As for how his life has changed in recent times? Godwin says if anything itโs just become everย even more fulfilling. โThereโs a lot more people at my shows and theyโre a lot more excited thanย ever before,โ he says with a sense of satisfaction. โI donโt feel like a fish out of water anymore. Iย had fun when it was just 100 people back in 2021. Now that itโs 10 or 20 times that, itโs just evenย better.โ
