Charles Wesley Godwin with special guest The Wilder Blue

September 21 @ 7:00 pm - 11:00 pm
Charles Wesley Godwin:
For a while there, Charles Wesley Godwin was in something of a funk. A typically prolific writer, and one who over his first two critically-acclaimed albums had proven himself to be a reflective and soulful songwriter and singer โ€” a storyteller in the vein of his heroes like Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson and Bruce Springsteenโ€” Godwin found himself in a state of stasis last year. To hear him tell it, he was frozen in place โ€” unable to find the words to what he hoped would become his new songs and under a level of pressure heโ€™d never previously experienced.

And yet, what would ultimately inspire the man was right in front of him all along: family.

โ€œI had to get back to the basics,โ€ says the introspective, self-aware artist of what finally set himย and his new songs free. โ€œI decided I was going to write about my life and my family. Itโ€™s whereย my heart was guiding me: to be super personal and dig right into the weeds of my life.โ€ Theย resulting LP, Family Ties โ€”Godwinโ€™s forthcoming third album, set for release on September 22ย via Big Loud Records โ€” is a truly stunning achievement, and the culmination of years of hardย work to arrive at this point.

This trend โ€” building up his fanbase in a grassroots manner and letting the music and live showย speak for itself โ€”continues to this day: whether heโ€™s headlining his own rowdy, raucous gigs, orย opening for close friend and musical comrade, Zach Bryan, Godwin says his live performancesย have never been more rewarding. Or lively, for that matter. Perhaps itโ€™s because, as he proudlyย says, the brand of music he traffics in โ€” namely story songs with a head full of heart and historyย โ€” seems to be having a true moment. โ€œMy shows will range from like 18-year-olds toย 80-year-olds,โ€ Godwin notes with a smile of his diverse, highly-enthusiastic and ever-growingย fanbase. โ€œThatโ€™s a pretty unique thing.โ€

As for how his life has changed in recent times? Godwin says if anything itโ€™s just become everย even more fulfilling. โ€œThereโ€™s a lot more people at my shows and theyโ€™re a lot more excited thanย ever before,โ€ he says with a sense of satisfaction. โ€œI donโ€™t feel like a fish out of water anymore. Iย had fun when it was just 100 people back in 2021. Now that itโ€™s 10 or 20 times that, itโ€™s just evenย better.โ€
